Scouting for Food - November 2009 PDF Print E-mail

The 2009 Scouting for Food (S4F) drive takes place between November 7th and November 14th.  As in years past, our Troop will participate in S4F by donating food from home and immediate neighbors.  Pack 962 will be busy distributing bags and collecting food throughout the town and nearby developments.  We’re asking each Scout to fill a few bags on their own and bring them in to the Meeting on Monday November 9th.  Bags were passed out at the October 19th meeting, but any other bags can be used for this purpose.  The amount we collect as a Troop will be credited to the Pack, so dig deep into your cabinets and pantries and do our best to help the Pack in this great cause.

Scouts are also asked to volunteer a few hours of their time Saturday, November 14th - S4F food collection day - to help our District in sorting and loading the collected food donations.  This is a fun operation to participate in and would provide you a greater appreciation of this event as well as Service Hours.  Eight of the Scouts have promptly signed up thus far; let’s increase this number and show the District that Troop 962 can do its part for this.  We expect this to take place between 9:00 and 1:00 in Purcellville, but actual times and specific location will be announced soon.  Frank Corrado is the adult lead for this, and will provide transportation and arrange for a pizza lunch.  Other Troop adults are invited to assist and may be needed at least for transportation.  Mr. Corrado can be reached at 540-822-3988 or by e-mail at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. The Troop participates in the Virginia adopt-a-highway program by cleaning up Milltown Road 3 or 4 times a year from the Lovettsville Community Center to 2 miles down Milltown toward Waterford.   Information about our permit A-4900471 is attached.  Safety information is also attached.

The Virginia Department of Transportation provides us with trash bags, vests, safety information and a blue sign with our Troop name on it.

We are to submit a pickup report after each clean-up.  The report is submitted through the VDOT website at www.virginiaDOT.org/programs/

The report includes: our permit number (A-4900471), our Troop name. pick up date, no. of participants, no. of hours worked, no. of bags, and info about the types of trash found and whether we want VDOT to pick up the bags.
